It is back to school!! It is a bitter sweet day. We are all so excited. For most of us, I know we hurry to get their first day back to school photo the day of and hurry to snap a photo and let’s get going.
Now, if you are anything like me and love photos, professional photographer here, you want to take some good photos of that first day back. My daughter is starting Kindergarten this year and I am so excited for her but this is such a huge day for us both. I went ahead and took her photos before the actual first day.
Here are some ideas for you…
Props
School Books
Use the school books they will have for the year and take some cute photos with them.
Have them balance them on their heads.
Put them in their backpack
Desks
Find some old vintage school desks and have them for props
Take a photo of them where they typically do homework.
Larger Shirts for Graduation
We all know those large adult size shirts that say Class of when they will graduate
Apple
Have them hold an apple
Balance the apple on their head
Sit at a desk with the apple
Backpack
Take cute photos with the backpack on their back
Looking over their shoulder
With all the books in their bag
Sitting with their backpack and lunch box
Pencils and paper
Look down and over them with their name written on paper so you can see how they improve writing their name
Have the pencil in their hair

1st Day of School Sign
Have a classic Back To School Sign that says “First Day of the Grade” they are in
Be sure not to post on social media their school and teacher name
Glasses
Take a cute photo of them with some school looking glasses.
Have them at the end of their nose
Holding them in their mouth
Chalk
Draw on the ground their grade and have them to sit on it
Look over them and it says their grade
Globes
Globes are a fun for a photo props. Have the kids to lay their head on it
Sit next to it
Look for where they live
Lunch Boxes
Have them holding the lunch box
Making their lunch
Nap Mat
If in Kindergarten, Have them holding their nap mat
laying on the nap mat
Blow up Numbers
If in Kindergarten have them to hold a “K”
then 1 for 1st grade and so on
Create Your Own Background
Use Different Color Table Cloths to make a backdrop
Find some Paper Bags To Create a banner
Blow up some balloon for a banner or get some specialty balloons
Amazon has some cute school theme banners to hang up.
Themed Shirt
Wearing a shirt that says something about their grade is the perfect prop!
Ear Rings
Themed ear rings that look like pencils, or school colors or a sport is super fun!
Don’t Leave out mom and dad on this special day. If no one is there to take it, set up the camera for a good photo of everyone. You will never regret having your photo with them on their first day back!

We all know and love the porch photos and they are easy to take and so cute.
With School Buses
If you can go early, have them take a photo with some school buses behind them or just go one day when they are parked there. Even if your kid never rides a bus, school buses are classic back to school photos and are an easy background.
In Front of The School
You never know where life can take you. You may have your kid go to that school their whole life, or you may move. I went to the same school from K-8th and never took a photo in front of it and don’t have one photo of the school. Since then, the school has changed so much. I wish I had a photo with it or even of it.
On The Playground
School playgrounds change over the years and your kid may know that playground so well and love certain things about it and have special memories. Go out one day and explore it with them and get some photos of them on it.
In A Field
I love finding beautiful fields to take photos in. Bring a few props, a themed shirt and have some fun.
In the Hallway
How cute would it be to grab a photo of you kid at their locker

Getting a locker is the best especially for the first time and decorating it! Be sure to grab a photo of them next to it, opening it up, reading their books, all the decor, their locker number and maybe them twisting open the lock code.
In A Store Looking For Supplies
You can get some super cute photo of them searching for their backpack, paper, binders, and crayons!!
Take photos of them choosing between two different lunch boxes
At Bus Stop
If your kid gets on the bus, grab a photo of them waiting with friends
Be sure to get a photo of them stepping on it.
Get a photo of the bus number as well for memory sake
Poses
It is hard to come up with poses for the kids to do plus we all know kids, especially boys are not fans of having their photos taken so have a list ready and be prepared. Get those photos done quick some everyone is happy.
